General Info & Brief History

Ransom County was established January 4, 1873, but wasn’t officially organized until April 4, 1881.  The town is named after Fort Ransom, which is named after General Thomas Edward Greenfield Ransom, a soldier who died for the Union during the Civil War. 

Considered to be one of North America’s most natural prairie lands, Ransom County is home to the Sheyenne National Grasslands, the Sheyenne State Forest (which is home to the only natural waterfall in North Dakota), and the Fort Ransom State Park.  The Sheyenne River offers outdoor recreation opportunities year-round, including the annual Sodbuster Days, GTO Cruise Weekend, and the Fort Ransom Saturday Night Camp Fire.
