The Moorhead Area Public Schools have a reputation for excellence. The high expectations of parents, the dedication of the teachers and staff, the visionary leadership, and the influence of three four-year colleges in the area have made the schools among the best in Minnesota, a state with a highly regarded educational system.
The district is best known for three things: the superior academic achievement of its students, its far-reaching extracurricular activities, and its efficiency in operating costs.
The mission of the Moorhead School District is to develop the maximum potential of every learner to thrive in a changing world. Each day approximately 5,300 students learn and thrive in the classrooms, hallways and playgrounds of Moorhead Area Public Schools.
Ellen Hopkins Elementary School, Robert Asp Elementary School, and S.G. Reinertsen Elementary School serve students in grades K-5, Horizon Middle School serves grades 6-8, and Moorhead High School serves grades 9-12. The Red River Area Learning Center offers an alternative school setting and independent study options for middle school and high school learners.

Children at Robert Asp Elementary School succeed through challenging experiences that promote a desire for life-long learning. The staff at Robert Asp is committed to providing each child with a safe and inviting learning environment. Our goal is to create a community of learners who work together and care and respect each other. Robert Asp is located in north Moorhead, and has approximately 650 students in grades K-5.
Robert Asp Elementary School was named in honor of Robert Asp. In 1953 Robert Asp began working as a math and science teacher for Moorhead Public Schools. Eventually he became a school counselor. He continued to teach until his death from cancer in 1980. Asp is also known for building the replica Viking ship, Hjemkomst. Asp exemplified qualities of character such as creativity, determination and commitment.
Middle School

Students in grades 6-8 at Horizon Middle School experience enhanced educational programming and many opportunities for learning and development in a state-of-the-art school designed with small learning communities. By working together, parents and school staff can provide a quality educational experience for the students.
Learning and development continue even after the bell rings. Activities at Horizon Middle School allow students to explore their interests and abilities, improve their skills and learn teamwork. Students can participate in special curricular activities such as band, chorus and orchestra or in extracurricular activities.
Extracurricular activities range from academic groups such as Science Olympiad, Mathcounts, Spelling Bee, and Destination ImagiNation to athletic activities for students in grades 7 and 8 like cross country, basketball, football, golf, gymnastics, swimming and diving, tennis, track, volleyball, and wrestling. There are also activities such as Student Council, the school newspaper, yearbook, and the school play, as well as intramural activities for sixth-grade students.

Diverse learning opportunities are available to students at Moorhead High School, the home of the Moorhead Spuds. Students can register for classes and participate in activities that cover many interests and abilities.
The ninth grade center is comprised of three learning communities of ninth-graders who work closely with four core teachers for language arts, math, science and social studies. The small learning communities create personalized learning environments for students and allow students to get to know each other and their teachers better.
At Moorhead High School, students have the opportunity to explore their areas of interest by enrolling in both required and elective classes. The high school has implemented a modified block schedule. The schedule, which combines 45-minute and 90-minute periods, accommodates student options for elective courses. Elective courses include world language, computer, industrial technology, journalism, family and consumer science, band, choir and orchestra classes. Juniors and seniors also have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement courses or courses at the local colleges through post-secondary options.
Activities ranging from musical, academic, special interest or athletic groups allow students at Moorhead High School to continue learning outside the classroom.
